Flood survivors mass up at one of the first food drop in Bagong Silangan village in Payatas, Quezon city. Food aid and supplies for typhoon victims are still scarce days after the onslaught of killer typhoon ‘Ondoy in’ the Philippines. “We were left no choice but to rescue ourselves during the flood, and now we are left to die of hunger with no decent meal in four days” shouts an old man as he join hundreds of others in the meelee to get food aid. ‘Ondoy’ left more than a hundred dead and dozens more missing as it wreaked havoc to 80% of the nation’s capital and nearby provinces.

“The situation is serious and we cannot wait…we have declared a state of calamity, so this shows how serious it is,” Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., chairman of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), said early Monday evening, two days after Ondoy dumped what the state weather bureau said was a month’s worth of rain in just a day.
